Nicometo Finishes with 18 Kills but Quincy Stops Saints in Four Sets

St. Louis – The Maryville University men's volleyball team was looking to stretch its winning streak to three but Quincy stopped the Saints in four sets Friday evening. Maryville won the first set 28-26 but the Hawks took the final three sets 25-19, 25-23, 25-18. Joe Nicometo led the Saints with 18 kills, while Jacob Fischer had seven kills. David Fleischer finished with seven kills and six blocks.

Leading set one 8-7, David Fleischer had a kill to spark a 3-0 run. Victor Ganev's kill made it 12-8. The Hawks rallied to tie the set at 13-13. Quincy used a 4-1 run to build a 22-19 lead. Joe Nicometo pounded down a kill as Maryville scored three straight to forge a tie at 22-22. The Hawks earned set point at 24-22 but the Saints saved them both to tie at 24-all. Deadlocked at 26-26, David Fleischer had consecutive solo blocks as the Saints won it 28-26.
 
In the second set, the Hawks led 14-11 but scored five of the next six points to stretch out its advantage to 19-12. The Saints earned one point but QU scored three out of four points and evened up the match at 1-1. The Hawks took the early lead in set three and were holding a 20-17 edge before the Saints scored two straight. Maryville go as close as 22-21 and again to 24-23 after a Fleischer ace. The Hawks took the set 25-23 on a kill to grab a 2-1 lead.
 
A kill by Fleischer tied the fourth set at 7-7. Quincy scored three of the next four to build a small edge. A QU error pulled the Saints to 10-9 but the Hawks reeled off three consecutive points. Nicometo's kill made it 13-10 but the Hawks used another 3-1 burst for a 16-11 advantage. Maryville closed to 18-15 after a QU miscue but the Hawks went on a 5-0 run to take control.
