Maryville Baseball Earns Two Wins over No. 21 Indianapolis

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University baseball won the first two games of a four-game set against No. 21 Indianapolis on Friday afternoon. The Saints won both games of a doubleheader to the ranked Greyhounds, taking game one 12-6 before a 5-3 comeback victory in game two.

Game One Recap
Ben Gregory started the game on the mound for Maryville, working around a one-out walk in the top of the first to keep Indianapolis off the board. In the top of the second, Matt Schuler walked, Stephen Randazzo doubled, and Andy Bunton brought in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.

The freshman starter set the side down in order in the bottom of the second before his team extended the lead to two in the third. Elias Stevens singled with one out and eventually scored an unearned run on an error from the Greyhound shortstop three batters later.

In the bottom of the fourth, UIndy struck for a trio of runs to take a one-run lead. That advantage quickly disappeared, however, when Randazzo stepped up and singled with two runners on to knot the game at three in the fifth.

Indianapolis regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Maryville offense kept the line moving. Michael Gould doubled with one out in the sixth, Zeb Roos was hit by a pitch, and Stevens doubled to tie the game at four. Michael Long then stepped up with two runners on and tripled to left-center to force a call to the bullpen. Schuler welcomed the new hurler with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-4.

The Saints added two in the seventh after Gould's RBI triple and three in the eighth. After Gregory's five innings of work with five strikeouts, Pat Evers called on Philip Reinhardt in relief. The Valmeyer, Ill., native bridged the gap with three solid innings, collecting seven strikeouts while allowing a lone run in the eighth.

Drake Downing was responsible for closing the door in the bottom of the ninth with a 12-5 lead. The Greyhounds hit consecutive two-out doubles to plate their sixth run, but Downing struck out the final hitter to wrap up a 12-6 win for the Saints.

Game Two Recap
The Greyhounds got to the Saints game two starting pitcher Jacob Kroeger in the second inning on an RBI single to left-center to take an early lead. In the bottom of the third, Gould picked up his fifth hit of the day with an RBI double to plate Jack Zebig. Roos gave Maryville the lead with an RBI single in the next at-bat.

UIndy continued to battle, tying the game in the fifth and forcing Kroeger out of the game in the bottom of the sixth by taking the lead with an RBI single from Nick Lukac. Kroeger finished his start with 5.1 innings, allowing three earned with five strikeouts. Ben Prywitch came in from the bullpen and worked out of the jam to end the threat.

Down to their final two outs in the top of the seventh, Zebig got things going with a double to right-center. He then stole third before Gould walked. Another stolen base from Gould put runners at second and third for Roos who doubled in a pair of runs.

Now up 4-3, Roos stole third base and came in to score on a wild pitch. With a chance to earn the win, Prywitch struck out the first batter in the bottom half of the inning before surrendering two singles. Again, the left-hander worked out of the jam, getting a fielder's choice and a strikeout to finish off the doubleheader sweep for the Saints.
