No. 9 Quincy Recap
Quincy opened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0. Maryville starter
Jacob Kroeger went on to settle down from a rocky first inning to post 6.2 innings of work, 10 strikeouts, and only three earned.
Â
The Saints got on the board in the fifth inning when
Matt Schuler, in the middle of a four-hit day, doubled to lead off the inning before
Jacob Hager walked.
Stephen Randazzo stepped in and reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed Schuler to score.
Â
In the sixth, Quincy added another run before Maryville retaliated with a solo home run by Hager in the seventh to make the score 3-2. Again, the Hawks padded their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Still trailing by three runs heading into the top of the ninth, the Saints loaded the bases by working three consecutive walks, allowing a pair of sacrifice flies to pull them within one. Quincy had
Zeb Roos and the Saints down to their last strike, but Roos singled to the shortstop to tie the game.
Elias Stevens followed up with a walk and Schuler drove in the go-ahead run with a single to center.
Â
Pat Evers called upon
Ben Prywitch to hold the lead in the ninth. The closer from Chesterfield, Mo., struck out the side and stranded the tying run at second base to pick up his third save of the season.
