ST. LOUIS – Maryville University men's soccer fell 1-0 on the road to the University of Illinois Springfield on Friday night. The Saints dropped their first contest of the season in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener after surrendering a first-half goal.
Run of Play:
- Nick Hemann was tested early with a pair of shots in the first five minutes, but he was up to the task making two saves.
- Reigning United Soccer Coaches National DII Player of the Week Kelvin Mulinya took the first shot on goal for the Saints at 5:50 but was turned away by Andrea Scapolo.
- Joe Conway opened the scoring at 21:55 with a rocket into the top of the goal after UIS collected a turnover from the Maryville backline.
- In the 31st minute, Antoine Trifonov tried one to the top-left corner, but again Scapolo was up to the task.
- Looking for his second goal, Conway tried again at 53:54 but Hemann slammed the door shut.
- Still held scoreless through most of the second half, Mason Crew tried one at 85:34 that missed high before Marcus Kalebo was denied at 87:30.
- The Saints made one last offensive push with 20 seconds remaining with a long pass, but the UIS defense cleared it to secure a 1-0 win.
