Yayo Mutombo's goal pushed Maryville University past No. 16 Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints improved to 1-0-1 after the freshman's first career goal in the 84
th minute of the match.
Run of Play:
- Maryville came out firing shots on the net, getting two consecutive balls on target in the seventh minute from Tim Smith and Mason Crew.
- Kelvin Mulinya put another one on goal at 7:33 before Antoine Trifonov just missed tucking one under the crossbar 11 seconds later.
- In total, the Saints put five shots on goal to SVSU's zero in the first half and took five more corner kicks.
- Cardinals' goalkeeper Nick Kay remained busy in the second half, saving a Miguel Cobos shot on goal less than two minutes in.
- Luca Bartoni swatted one out of the air and near the net at 61:38 but rang it off the left woodwork.
- The Saints continued pressing and got an excellent scoring chance off the foot of Quinn Connolly in the 78th minute.
- Still holding extended pressure in the SVSU defensive end, Leyson Losada found Tim Smith who sent a long pass to Yayo Mutombo. Mutombo settled, beat the defender in a one-on-one, and sent in the game-winner to the left side of the net at 84:12.
