Saints Hockey Opens Second Semester on Friday against No. 15 Illinois State

ST. LOUIS – The sixth-ranked Maryville University M1 hockey team will open 2024 in a Friday home game against No. 15 Illinois State University at 8:15 p.m. The Saints wrapped up a two-game sweep against Indiana Tech on Dec. 9 and will exit the break with a 13-7-1 overall record.

Maryville hockey is on a tear as of late, winning six of their last seven games including a two-game road sweep of Missouri State University, a win over Niagara University, one against Iowa State University, and two against Indiana Tech. They were rewarded in the American Collegiate Hockey Association computerized rankings with the highest placement in the history of the program at sixth.

Sophomore Sam Edwards currently leads the Saints in points with 18 including a team-high 12 goals. Additionally, his first hat trick of 2023 on Dec. 1, fueled a 6-4 victory over No. 20 Missouri State. In goal, Ed Coffey has started 17 of 21 games with a .918 save percentage, nine wins, and a 2.36 goals-against average.

As for Illinois State, they come into Friday's matchup at 16-9-0 after splitting a four-game set with McKendree University in early December. Tony Campise and Mike Sliwinksi lead the Redbirds in points with 27 while Campise's 15 goals are tied with Ethan Chensey for the team lead. Brendan Donovan has led the ISU between the pipes with a 12-6-0 record, a 3.26 GAA, and a .919 save percentage.

The puck drop at the Maryville University Hockey Center will be at 8:15 p.m., followed by a 5:15 p.m., start on Saturday, Jan. 6. The game will also be streamed for free here.
