Hoing and Brinkmann Tally Nine Kills Apiece but Missouri Baptist Downs Saints in Four

St. Louis – The Maryville volleyball team made the short trip over to Missouri Baptist looking for its second straight win over the Spartans. However, MBU slowed down the Saints attack and prevailed 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19.

How it Happened
Both teams had small runs before the Spartans built a 14-9 lead. Lily Brown had a kill as the Saints scored three straight points and four of the next five to close to within 15-13. However, MBU used a 6-0 run to eventually take set one. Tied at 4-4 in the second, Josey Wahlers had a kill as the Saints went on a 4-1 spree to build a 7-4 edge. A Makenna Brauman kill pushed Maryville up 12-8. MBU chipped away at the deficit and tied the score at 14-all. The Saints went back on top by one before the Spartans scored six straight to take the set.

Set three was tied at 3-3 before the Saints embarked on a 6-0 spree. Emma Hoing started the run with a kill, and Brauman followed. A Spartan error eventually put the Saints ahead 9-3. Maryville kept the lead and held off repeated MBU runs before a block by Wahlers and Ella Brinkmann ended the set 25-23. The Saints carried the momentum over to the fourth set and tallied the opening four points. Gracie Newell had a kill to spark the run, and Regina Elguezabal served an ace. Brown put down a kill, and an MBU miscue led to the 4-0 lead. The hosts rallied to take the lead but Brinkmann's kill deadlocked the score at 6-6. MBU went on a 5-0 run but the Saints answered with a 4-0 burst of their own to close to 11-10. The teams traded 4-0 runs before the Spartans took control with five unanswered points to take the match.
