ST. LOUIS – In the first bit of action of the
Preston Ingram-era of Maryville Men's Basketball, the Saints dropped an exhibition bout to Division I-Saint Louis University, 106-65.
Dewayne Vass tied a career-high in points in the loss, dropping 24 on 8-10 from the field.
Henry Meyer impressed in his debut off the bench, working an efficient 12 points in just 13 minutes on the hardwood.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Facing off against a new-look SLU Billikens squad headed up by NCAA tournament darling Robbie Avila, size did not favor the Saints. The speed made up for it in the early goings, with Maryville holding a 8-5 lead at the first stoppage. The Bilikens took off from there, tossing out a 14-2 run that left the Saints in the dust. Heading into halftime, seven saints saw the scoring column, with Vass accounting for six points.
Trailing into the second half, the fatigue of a shortened bench caught up to the Saints as the home team issued 58 points. Vass, despite the deficit, continued to ball out, recording 18 of his 24 total points in the second half with seven of them coming at the charity stripe.
UP NEXT
The Saints have 13 days to rest up and get healthy before the regular season begins. They will travel north to Wisconsin for a pair of neutral site bouts with Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
