Weitlaner Nets Second-Half Game Winner In Fayette

FAYETTE, Iowa. – Maryville men's soccer picked up GLVC win number seven on the road, defeating Upper Iowa 1-0. The Saints were relentless on the offensive end, tallying 26 shots on the day, nine of which were on the net.

Sebastian Weitlaner picked a good time to get his first goal of the 2024 season, picking up the game winner at the 58th minute mark. It was the first goal for Weitlaner since Nov. 11, 2022, against Wis.-Parkside in the NCAA tournament.

Steen Nieslen was only tested once in 90 minutes, recording a save at the seventh minute, going the rest of the match unchallenged.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just seven minutes into the contest, it looked as if the Saints were going to be pushed defensively. But that early chance by the Peacocks ended up being their only as the Saints lived in their half of the pitch. The boys in red ended up taking six corners in the first half, while accumulating 13 shots. Despite the pressure, the Saints couldn't put the ball home.

A breather might have been the only thing the Saints needed as at the 58th minute Weitlaner broke through for the game winner.

Chippy action and physical play plagued the second half after the goal as UIU got hit with 15 foul calls while the Saints got hit with nine. The Peacocks tallied five cards within the ten minutes of play, including a red.

UP NEXT
The Saints will end their road GLVC schedule at Lewis on Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
