Ella Brinkmann recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs as the Maryville volleyball team swept McKendree 25-15, 25-11, 25-19 Saturday afternoon. The Saints defense held the Bearcats to just a .069 hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied at 12-12 in set one, Brinkmann had a kill to spark a 6-0 run. After a Bearcat error,
Ella Domian drilled in a kill and Brinkmann served an ace.
Josey Wahlers put down a kill, and
Emma Hoing hammered a kill for an 18-12 advantage. The Bearcats scored one point before the Saints tallied four of the next five points. Maryville tallied the last three points to win the opener 25-15.
Leading 5-4 in the second set, Wahlers and
Lily Brown combined on a block at the front end of seven straight points. After a Brinkmann kill, Domian and Wahlers posted a block and
Taylor Reynolds served two straight aces. Back-to-back Bearcat hitting miscues led to a 12-4 margin. McKendree finally scored before Maryville went on an epic 10-0 run. A Bearcat service error start the run, Domian registered three kills, and a miscue by McKendree led to a 22-5 lead.
Set three was close through out and Maryville's margin was 16-15. Wahlers put down a kill, and
Taylor Hasbrook's ace led to a 18-15 edge. Hoing had a kill to ignite a 4-0 run.
Olivia Klump served an ace, and Brinkmann followed with a kill.
Makenna Brauman drilled in a kill and put down another ball to reach match point. A block by Brauman and Wahlers ended the match for the Saints.
