ST. LOUIS – In the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, the Maryville women's soccer team completed step one of it's journey towards a GLVC Championship, defeating the No. 8-seeded Truman State Bulldogs 1-0.
Ashlyne Hunt was the hero for the Saints, scoring at the 67th minute of action, for her 11th goal of the season and third in her postseason career.
The Saints once again dominated the pace of play and time of possession, rattling off 26 shots while not giving up a single Bulldog shot through 90 minutes of action. That performance is eerily similar to the meeting between the Saints and the Bulldogs in the regular season with the Saints taking 27 unanswered shots in that bout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs, much like the earlier season matchup, had no answer for the defiant back line of the Saints as throughout the match. The defense allowed for the dominant offense of the Saints to pepper the Bulldogs with shots, including three off the foot of
Elsa Nilson-Hurtig ibn the first half alone.
With the score knotted at the break, the Saints kept the pressure on. That finally cracked the Bulldogs at the 67th as some slick passes by both
Maddie Dickerman and
Ulrika Bredin gave Hunt the lane to head the ball in the net.
With a lead, the Saints were able to see the game come to a comfortable end and punch their ticket to the GLVC semifinals at Creve Coeur Park.
