CREVE COUER, Mo. – The Maryville men's soccer team fell just short of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship on Sunday. The No. 2-seeded Saints battled the No. 1-seeded Lewis Flyers in the championship match which was decided via penalties, the Flyers winning 5-4.
Â
In regulation,
Bryce Glisson tallied the Saints goal at the 49th minute of action, earning himself All-Tournament honors. He was joined by
Mason Crew and
Steen Nielsen as All-Tournament honorees.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers were the first to strike in regulation, scoring their goal at the 17th minute mark from the Creve Coeur Soccer Complex. From there the Flyers played conservative, attempting to stifle any offense of the Saints. That action left the score 1-0 at the half.
Â
With fresh legs, the Saints went on the early offensive. A shot by
Magnus Buschmeier was ricocheted back onto play by the Flyer keeper right to Glisson, who sent it home.
Â
Â
Both teams traded attacks for the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods, but neither side could break the deadlock.
Â
The Saints began the penalty shootout on a roll, converting on their first four chances with
Alberto Di Pierri,
Sebastian Weitlaner,
Adrian Fuster Juretzki and Crew all converting. A big save by the Flyer keeper and subsequent made chance ended the match and gave Lewis the championship.
