Saints Men's Volleyball Storms Past Cumberland in Three Sets

St. Louis – Despite a late-hour scheduling change, the Maryville University men's volleyball team recorded its fifth straight victory with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 decision over Cumberland (Tenn.) University. The Saints have matched the program record for longest winning streak previously done Feb. 19, to Feb. 26, 2022. Luke Kraft hit .591 and had 13 kills, while Makai Scott added 10 kills. Jacob Fischer contributed eight kills and hit .727.

The Phoenix took the early lead and held a 17-12 edge in set one. Cameron Lee had a kill to start a 5-1 run for the Saints. After a Cumberland error, the teams traded service miscues. A Jacob Fischer kill pulled the Saints to 18-17. Maryville finally pulled even on a Makai Scott kill at 19-all. After a Luke Kraft kill, the Saints took their first lead at 21-20 on a block by David Fleischer and Kraft. Tied at 21-21, the Saints reeled off four straight points to take the opener 25-21 on a kill by Fleischer.
 
Down 7-6 in the second set, the Saints scored four of the next five points to grab a 10-8 edge. A Phoenix error and a kill by Scott put Maryville up 13-11. The Saints held a narrow margin at 20-19 but scored three straight kills. Scott and Fleischer started the run, and a Kraft termination was good for a 23-19 margin. Another Scott kill ended the set at 25-21.
 
The Saints led set three 10-8 before surging ahead with a 5-0 run. After a Cumberland error, Scott had kills and teamed with Fischer for a block. A Kraft kill was good for a 15-8 lead. The Phoenix scored but the Saints answered with four of the next five points to take control. A Fischer kill ended the set at 25-18 and the match.
