Mussorici Ties Season High with 23 Points in Defeat at Upper Iowa

Fayette, Iowa – Despite a season-high tying 23 points from Antoinette Mussorici, the Maryville women's basketball team saw its four-game conference road winning streak end 84-76 at Upper Iowa. Mussorici sank 13 free throws, while Haidyn Pitsch sank four 3-pointers and added 16 points. The Saints led by five with under four minutes to play but UIU rallied.

The Saints fell behind in the first quarter and were down 21-14 after 10 minutes. UIU pushed the margin to double digits in the second as the Saints trailed 35-25 at the break. The deficit was still 37-28 before the Saints roared back into the game. Mussorici sank two straight buckets to ignite a 12-0 run. Gracie Stugart had a three-point play, and Mussorici scored five consecutive points as her three-point sequence gave the Saints a 40-37 advantage at the 6:45 mark. Stugart surrounded four free throws around a Faith Hawthorne layup. The Saints took their largest lead of the day at 57-49 late in the third.
 
The Peacocks scored the final five points of the third and opened the fourth with two straight hoops to retake the lead. Hawthorne converted back-to-back layups but Upper Iowa tied the game again at 64-all. After a Stugart layup, Karlee Feldman had a three-point play as Maryville's margin stood at 69-64. With 3:55 to play, Mussorici scored for a 71-66 lead but the Peacocks rallied with a 10-0 run. Two free throws by Hawthorne trimmed the deficit to 76-73 but UIU tallied six straight to hold off the Maryville charge.

What's Next?
Maryville begins its final homestand Thursday, Feb. 22, as Southwest Baptist visits for 1000 Saints Day. The basketball teams are looking to draw 1,000 fans on the day. A special recognition will be held honoring Director of Athletics Lonnie Folks, who is retiring at the end of June.
