Maryville Softball Goes 1-4 at Washburn Tournament

TOPEKA, Kan. – Maryville University softball went 1-4 at the Washburn Tournament in Topeka, Kan., over the weekend. The Saints picked up a win over Newman University in game one on Friday before dropping four straight to end the tournament.

Chayse Ramey got the start in game one on Friday and threw a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over Newman. The senior pitcher from Decatur, Ill., struck out a pair of Jets while allowing five hits. Addison Koth provided the offense with a pair of solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while Taylor Duff and Melanie Nelson also picked up RBI in the win.

Freshman Ella Ludden got the start in Friday's second game against Fort Hays State University and gave Maryville five innings of work while allowing three earned with six strikeouts. Opposing pitcher Savannah Egger held the Saints' offense at bay, however, and improved to 5-0 to start her season after a 3-1 victory over the Saints.

On Saturday, Nelson's RBI double in the top of the third inning provided the only offense for her team in a 9-1 loss to St. Cloud State University. Augustana University was on the other side in the afternoon game where they posted 13 runs on the Maryville pitching staff in a 13-5 win. Kylie Swinney had an impressive performance, collecting two hits, three RBI, and a solo home run in the top of the fifth.

The Saints met Emporia State University in their fifth and final game on Sunday. The Hornets led off the game with a solo home run and never looked back, earning a 15-0 win.

Maryville softball will look to rebound in the McKendree University tournament beginning on Friday, March 1. They open with Kentucky Wesleyan College at 1 p.m., followed by a game two matchup with Purdue University Northwest.
