Maryville Softball Drops Two to Open 2024 Season

EDMOND, Okla. – Maryville softball dropped its first two games of 2024 on Thursday afternoon with losses to Southern Nazarene University and Pittsburg State University. The Saints fell 8-1 in game one against the Crimson Storm and lost 15-2 against the Gorillas.

Southern Nazarene opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single up the middle from Kenedi Morelock. The next two batters reached on a throwing error and a single to plate Morelock. Still, with no outs, Hailey Evans drove in another run with a single before Emma Swearingen's RBI double to make it 3-0.
 
A quiet second inning set the stage for a Crimson Storm RBI triple in the bottom of the third to extend the lead out to 5-0. Maryville got one back in the top of the fourth when Erin Wurst reached base on a throwing error and later came around to score on Mandi Lenon's RBI single to left field.
 
SNU added three more runs before the end of the game to give Janie Worthington her first win of the season after five innings of work. Chayse Ramey took the loss with two earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Freshman Mercedes Delgado went 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs but no earned.

Pittsburg State Recap
Pittsburg State scored one in the first and nine in the top of the second to open an early 10-0 lead. The Saints responded in the bottom of the second when Emily Corona came around to score on a Jenna Kosnoff sacrifice fly after starting the inning with a triple. Addison Koth singled and Kaitlyn Wagner doubled to set the stage for another SAC fly from Tori Forbeck.
 
The Gorillas added two more in the third and three in the fourth to extend the lead to 15-2. Kiana Pogroszewski pitched four innings allowing just two earned and seven hits while Chelsea Beville wrapped up the game in the fifth.
 
Ella Ludden took her first loss of the year on the rubber after surrendering four in an inning of work. Chayse Ramey came out of the bullpen and picked up three strikeouts in two innings of work without allowing a baserunner.
