Zebig Hits Three Home Runs as Saints Take Doubleheader from Peacocks

ST. LOUIS – Jack Zebig hit a trio of home runs in a pair of Maryville wins over Upper Iowa University on Saturday. The Saints took game one with a 10-0 mercy rule victory and followed up with an 8-4 win in game two.

Game One Recap
Neither team got a run in the first inning, but Colin Bergmann led off the second with a walk, stole second, and later scored on a pair of balks. In the third inning, the Saints extended the lead to 3-0 on a Michael Gould sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Michael Long.

Jacob Kroeger finished his fourth scoreless inning by retiring the side in order while his offense doubled the run support in the bottom half. Matt Arnold and Andy Bunton got on base in front of Zebig who launched a home run to right field to make the lead 6-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Zebig dug in with the bases loaded and blasted a grand slam to blow the game open at 10-0. It was his fifth home run of the season, already surpassing his last year's total of four.

On the verge of a short-game victory, Noah Harbin, on in relief of Kroeger, got a groundout, a flyout, and a strikeout to end the game. Kroeger's third victory of the year came with nine punchouts.

Game Two Recap
Stevens got the Saints off to an early lead in game two by hammering a two-run home run to right-center with one out in the first. Michael Long then walked and later came around to score on Colin Bergmann's RBI single to center.

Starting pitcher Ben Gregory worked three scoreless innings to begin his day, and received two more runs on another Bergmann RBI single in the third and a throwing error on a stolen base attempt. In the fourth, Stevens singled in two more runs to extend the lead to seven.

The Peacocks were held scoreless by Gregory until the top of the sixth. A single and an error put a runner in scoring position for Gunnar Wicklund who drove in the run with a single. Zebig responded with his third home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1.

Gregory was sent back out to close the seven-inning game but found some trouble after the lead off batter reached on a drop third strike. UIU then got a single and a triple to drive in a pair of runs. Griffin King was called on in relief and surrendered a single up the middle to pull the Peacocks to within four.

King got the next batter swinging at a pitch in the dirt to seal up an 8-4 final. Gregory picked up his first win of the season after throwing 6.2 innings with three earned and nine strikeouts.
