Softball Loses in Extras to No. 5 UIndy in Game One, Drops Game Two 8-5

INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to the fifth-ranked University of Indianapolis. The Saints fall to 18-25 overall and 10-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Game One Recap
Maryville starting pitcher Chayse Ramey gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, but still retired the side in order on a double play and a groundout to third base. She followed up in the second with a hit-by-pitch, a pop-out, and a double play on a strikeout and a caught stealing.

The Greyhounds plated a run in the bottom of the third when a leadoff walk came around to score on a Jocelyn Calvin RBI double to left.

The Saints answered right back in the top of the fourth after back-to-back singles from Brooklyn Moore and Melanie Nelson put runners on base with no outs. Kenzee Smith got a pair of strikeouts in front of Erin Wurst who loaded the bases on an error. Kylie Swinney drove in a two-out RBI with an infield single to tie the game, but Smith held the game steady with another strikeout to end the frame.

Ramey and Smith kept the game knotted at 1-1 into extra innings. Maryville put a runner on base in the eighth with a two-out walk to Taylor Duff, but UIndy halted a two-out rally. In the bottom of the ninth, the Greyhounds loaded the bases with no outs before the next two batters were retired by Ramey. Grace Mosele dug in with a chance to be the hero and worked a walk to end the game with a 2-1 final.

Ramey's final line for game one was 8.2 innings, five hits, two earned runs, four walks, five strikeouts, and 138 pitches. Smith improved to 21-1 in 2024 with nine innings, six hits, one unearned run, one walk, and seven strikeouts on 135 pitches.

Maryville responded in the top of the third after Emily Corona led off the inning with a double to center field. She came in to score later in the inning on an error after Nelson put a ball in play. In the fourth, Jenna Kosnoff hit her second home run of the season to make the score 4-3.
