Two Senior Day Wins Propels Maryville Softball into GLVC Tournament

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University used a pair of Senior Day victories over the University of Upper Iowa to punch a ticket to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday. The Saints needed to win both games against the Peacocks to make the postseason tournament and broke through with a 15-11 win in game one and an 8-2 victory in game two.

Game One Recap
The Maryville offense went to work in the bottom of the first, getting three runs on one error and three walks in the inning. The Peacocks responded with a five-run top of the second to take a 5-3 lead.

The Saints regained the advantage in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Isabella Garcia and an RBI triple from Taylor Duff. Later in the inning, Kylie Swinney intentionally got caught between first and second to let Duff score from third. Amid confusion on an out call for the tag at home plate, Swinney never stopped running and scored from first base to put her team up 7-5.

UIU took an 8-7 lead in the third before the Saints' offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth. Addison Koth drove in two runs with a single, Tori Forbeck plated one with a single, and Garcia doubled home another. Erin Wurst continued the hit parade with an RBI single and scored on an error two batters later.

Now trailing 13-8, Upper Iowa came back with three more runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. In the sixth, the Peacocks put a runner on second with two outs which forced Maryville to call in starting pitcher Chayse Ramey back into the game. Ramey worked out of the jam with a pop-out to second base.

Freshman Jenna Kosnoff continued an impressive first year at Maryville with a two-run home run that plated Swinney after she singled with two outs. Ramey finished off a 15-11 win and her first save of the season by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh.

Losing Pitcher: D. Vetter (8-16)

Game Two Recap
Ramey took the ball again in game two and started it the same way she ended the first – with a 1-2-3 inning. Upper Iowa got an RBI double from Addy Alber in the top of the second, but Mandi Lenon struck back with a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the third.

Still deadlocked at one in the bottom of the fifth, Corona got a pitch she could handle and sent a rocket over the wall in left-center to put Maryville ahead.

Upper Iowa tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the offense kept the Saints' playoff hopes alive in the bottom half. Kosnoff, Corona, and Lenon all singled in runs to make the score 5-2. Koth pinch hit once again, this time with two runners on, and hit a loud home run near the driveway out in left field at the Maryville Athletic Complex.

Ramey punched Maryville's ticket to the postseason by finishing up an 8-2 complete-game win in the seventh. She finished game two with four hits allowed, two earned runs, and five strikeouts.
