Maryville Softball Picks Up Two Wins Over McKendree on Saturday

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University softball swept a conference doubleheader over McKendree University on Saturday afternoon. The Saints were led by a pair of wins in the circle by Chayse Ramey, a home run from Isabella Garcia in game one, and a two-RBI double from Brooklyn Moore in game two.

Game One Recap
Chayse Ramey and Ellie Quaethem went back and forth on the rubber in the first three frames, each throwing up zeroes. In the top of the fourth, McKendree got a one-out single from Lauren Harris and she stole third. Ramey got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to keep the game 0-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Erin Wurst singled to the shortstop and came in to score when Isabella Garcia clubbed a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field. The blast gave the Saints a 2-0 lead and Garcia her third home run of the year.

Brooklyn Moore hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third when Emily Corona singled with one out. Now with two outs, McKendree threw a wild pitch and allowed both runners to score after a throwing error by the catcher trying to nab the first runner scoring.

Ramey worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning and finished off her complete game shutout with two strikeouts and a flyout in the seventh. The senior from Decatur, Ill., went seven innings while allowing just three hits and picking up a career-high 13 strikeouts.

Game Two Recap
Ramey got the ball again in game two but allowed a leadoff single and an RBI double to Olivia Stansbury to give McKendree a 1-0 advantage. She bounced back with four consecutive scoreless frames to end her second start with five innings, one earned, five hits, and five strikeouts.

The Maryville offense got the lead back for their ace in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia singled to lead off the frame, Kylie Swinney was hit by a pitch, and Jenna Kosnoff singled home the tying run. In the next at-bat, Moore doubled down the left field line to drive home two more. Bearcat pitcher Paige McAllister worked out of the jam after that with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.

After the Saints made a pitching change in the sixth, McKendree put runners at first and second with one out, forcing another call to the bullpen. Emily Senjan was the new arm and walked her first batter before getting a ground ball that allowed the shortstop Corona to throw the runner out at home. Senjan then got a pop-out to end the threat.

Down to their final three outs, the Bearcats got a leadoff single, a walk, and an RBI single from Stansbury to cut the lead to 3-2. A walk loaded the bases, but a fly ball to the right fielder Melanie Nelson ended the game when she threw the runner out at home trying to tag up for the game-tying run.

The clutch outfield assist from Nelson gave Senjan her second save of the season and improved Maryville's conference record to 9-5.
