Saints Take Game One 5-4 Over UMSL, Drop Game Two 8-5

ST. LOUIS – Chayse Ramey pitched Maryville softball to a 5-4 game one win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday before they dropped game two 8-5. The Saints now sit at 18-21 overall and 10-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Game One Recap
Game one starters Chayse Ramey and Ashley Borowitz traded scoreless innings through three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Taylor Duff drove in a run with a double, Jenna Kosnoff plated two runs with a single, an error allowed a fourth run to score, and Brooklyn Moore drove in the fifth run with a sacrifice fly.

Now trailing 5-0, the Tritons began the comeback bid with an RBI single in the fifth inning. The Saints made a pitching change in the sixth, and UMSL capitalized with a couple of singles and a throwing error that allowed a run to score. An RBI groundout in the next at-bat made it 5-3.

Borowitz worked around two singles to lead off the bottom of the sixth and got more run support in the seventh. A one-out walk and a two-out single put runners on base for Simia Spahiev who hit an infield single to pull the game to within one run.

Maryville decided to put the starting pitcher Ramey back into the game in a bases-loaded situation, two outs, and the tying run at third. The senior got a quick pop out to first base to end the threat and to seal up her 14th victory of the year.

UMSL jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two hits and one Maryville error. They added three more in the top of the second on an Irene Travis RBI double and a two-RBI double from McKenzie Lamos.

The Saints got three back in the bottom of the third when Moore walked and scored on a Duff double to left-center. Two batters later, Kylie Swinney drove in a run with a single and a second run scored on an error.

Emily Senjan, on in relief, held the Tritons scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to buy time for her team to come back. In the fifth, Erin Wurst drove in a run with a single to left field to pull the Saints to within two runs.

Lamos drove in two more runs for the visitors with a double in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-4.

Down to their final three outs, Duff singled to lead off the seventh followed by singles from Isabella Garcia and Swinney. Sherrick, however, got the first out on a pop-up, the second out on an RBI fielder's choice from Kosnoff, and a pop-out to shortstop to end the game.
