William Jewell Recap
William Jewell held the Saints scoreless in the top of the first and posted two runs in the bottom half against Maryville starting pitcher
Ben Gregory. Gregory settled in during the second and retired the side in order with three flyouts.
Â
The second time through the lineup brought more power for the Saints. Levi Ebersoldt, the Cardinals' starter, retired the leadoff man in the third but surrendered back-to-back home runs to
Michael Gould and
Elias Stevens to tie the game.
Matt Schuler doubled to right-center to make it three straight hits, but he was stranded on second.
Â
Jewell reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the third after a one-out walk to Evan Jilbert, a stolen base, and an RBI single from Jordan Phillips. Phillips got another good jump on Gregory, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Cole Conner.
Â
Camden Ruby led off the top of the fourth with a double down the right-field line and advanced to third on
Matt Arnold's hustle double on a blooper to centerfield.
Andy Bunton laid down a safety squeeze bunt to plate a run before Gould drove a ball into the gap in left to tie the game at four.
Â
In the fifth, the Saints loaded the bases with two outs but Ebersoldt was up to the task and kept the game tied with a groundout. Maryville left the ducks on the pond for the second consecutive inning in the sixth when WJC reliever Nick Fitzanko bailed his team out of trouble with a strikeout.
Â
For the third inning in a row, the offense loaded the bases in the seventh, this time with no outs. A third opportunity turned out differently as
Jack Zebig gave his club a lead with a two-run double down the right-field line. Stevens walked with one out to put three runners on again to set the stage for an RBI walk from Schuler. An error brought in another run before
Jacob Hager blew the game open with a two-RBI double to right field to push the lead to 10-4.
Â
Pat Evers made a call to the bullpen to open the bottom of the seventh, ending Gregory's day with six innings of work, four earned runs, and two strikeouts.
Ryan Hoshaw and
Drake Downing combined for three innings out of the bullpen to close out a 10-4 victory.
