ST. LOUIS –
Jacob Kroeger threw a one-hit shutout and
Jack Zebig slugged a grand slam in a 10-0 victory over McKendree University on Thursday afternoon. Maryville improves to 32-15 overall and 24-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Â
McKendree Recap
Jacob Kroeger took the ball on the mound in the series opener for Maryville and he picked up where he left off after an impressive start at Drury University last weekend. The left-handed senior from Palmyra, Mo., stifled the Bearcats in the early part of the game, not allowing a hit until the top of the fifth inning.
Â
While their ace was putting together a gem, the Saints' offense went to work. In the bottom of the first
Elias Stevens singled in a run to open a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, three runs came in on an RBI single from
Jack Zebig, an error, and a run-scoring base hit from
Michael Gould.
Â
Michael Long drove in
Colin Bergmann with a double off the top of the wall in the third before Zebig tucked a grand slam down the right-field line just inside the foul pole to extend the lead to nine. The Saints added a 10
th run with an RBI single from
Camden Ruby in the fourth.
Â
Brandon Roth broke up Kroeger's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth before the lefty worked around it with a flyout and a 6-4-3 double play. He wrapped up a 10-0 mercy rule victory and his second complete game victory of the season with 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and the seventh.
