Quincy, Ill. – The Maryville volleyball team began the Quincy Hawk Invitational with two straight victories Friday. The Saints swept Malone 25-10, 25-16, 26-24 and downed Missouri S&T in a nonconference match 25-19, 17-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10.

The Saints trailed in the opening set but took control with an 8-0 burst. After one point by the Pioneers Maryville embarked with eight consecutive points for a 20-4 advantage. The Saints held Malone to a -0.026 hitting percentage in the set. The Pioneers led 13-12 until the Saints tallied five straight points on kills for a 17-13 lead. Five unanswered points sealed the win for Maryville. In the final set, the Saints edged ahead with three straight. A 5-1 run pushes Maryville to a 19-15 advantage. After a Malone error.
Delaney Lemay had a kill for a 21-16 advantage. The Saints had a raft of match points at 24-19 but could not convert. Malone tied the score at 24-24 but kills by Brinkmann and
Josey Wahlers had consecutive kills for a 26-24 triumph.

Missouri S&T recap
The Saints won the first two sets before the Miners took the next two. Maryville scored seven straight points and battled to force a fifth set in a victory against Missouri S&T. Up 8-7 in the decisive set,
Ella Domian had a kill to start a 4-0 run. After a
Lilly Stanton ace,
Emma Hoing finished a play.
Hanna Dressing hammered down a kill for a 12-7 lead. The Miners got to within 13-10 before
Ella Brinkmann and a block by the tandem of
Lily Brown and
Josey Wahlers ended the match. Wahlers had a splendid overall match with career highs of nine kills and a .750 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks.
