LIBERTY, Mo. – At the 14th minute of play,
Mason Crew of Maryville men's soccer hammered a ball into the back of the net, celebrating with his teammates in the pouring rain. That goal against the William Jewell Cardinals proved to be the decider as for 76 minutes on, the Saints defense showed out, producing the first clean sheet of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints went on the attack early, launching their first shot on goal at the 9th minute mark, with
Axton Anom then taking a rapid pair of shot just two minutes later before Crew did the job.
The Saints limited the Cardinals to just three shots in the first and four in the second, with the home team only able to get one shot off in the final ten minutes of action as they attempted the equalizer.
Theo McIntyre claimed four saves on the day on route to his first clean sheet of the season, and the first of his career.
DAWG TALK
Head Coach Adam Hall on the second-straight GLVC victory…
"We spoke about trying to get clean sheet, with us not having one yet this year. We had to dig deep., they were causing problems for us at times, but this is another important milestone for this team…. The boys played really well, a lot of good performances from a lot of different players, subs were big off the bench today."
Crew on the win…
"These wins are great, helps morale, building blocks from her on out. [We] had a little bit of a rough start to the year, but things are moving in the right direction, gotta keep working together as a team, working hard in practice and these are the types of results that'll happen."
Crew on the wet conditions…
"It's the best type of weather to play, ball moves easier, easier to run, easier to slide in. Belly slides are always fun. You come out here, you travel out here, you gotta perform, otherwise it ain't worth the travel."
