TOPEKA, Kan. – The Maryville University women's soccer team has started their season with history, defeating the No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods 2-1. The upset signals the biggest ranked victory in program history and only the fifth win against a top-25 foe.*
Maryville used goals by
Ulrika Bredin and
Lotte Brands to power past Washburn on their home turf, while
Agnes Vilen in her freshman debut between the posts made five saves, including four in the second to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints came out of the gates firing, with
Ulrika Bredin scoring off a pass from
Elsa Nilson-Hurtig at the fifth minute of action. With the lead, the Saints kept pushing, but fouls hurt them with a yellow on Brands and then a foul on
Emily Doane with ten minutes left in the first giving the Ichabods good field position. The miscues did not go unpunished as Washburn tied it with just under five minutes left in the half.
After the intermission, Washburn got on the gas, taking a trio of shots, two of which were gobbled up by Vilen. The Saints offense turned it right back on, with the first shot of the second 45 finding the back of the net as Brands, from a pass of
Sara Lawler re-gifted the Saints the lead.
From that point, the Saints defense shined, holding it down for the 2-1 victory.

Washburn, despite starting the season ranked No. 2 in the country, has now suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of St. Louis schools, with Missouri-St. Louis downing the Ichabods 2-0 on Thursday, Sept. 5.
