ST. LOUIS –
Luke Williams led the Maryville men's basketball team with 22 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Saints prevailed over William Jewell 72-63. Williams hit eight of his 11 field goal attempts and grabbed seven rebounds.
Lucas Burton hit 7-of-9 shots to finish with 19 points, while
Trey Redd notched nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. The Saints shot 63.6 percent for the game (28-of-44).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints were holding on to a slim 41-40 edge before reeling off seven straight points. Williams drained a 3-pointer to start the run and tacked on a layup.
Dewayne Vass scored on drive to the bucket for a 48-40 lead. Jewell closed to 52-49 but Williams and Redd converted consecutive jumpers to push the margin back to 56-49 with eight minutes to play.
The Cardinals again closed the gap to just two until Burton sank two jumpers for a 64-58 advantage. The Saints stayed ahead before making a late run to salt the game away. Vass was wide open on the right wing and splashed in a 3-pointer. Redd fed Burton for a transition dunk and Williams hit one free throw as the Saints took their largest lead of the game at 70-60 in the final seconds.
