ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – The Maryville men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end at Lewis Friday evening. The Flyers rallied in the second half and prevailed 78-68.
Trey Redd paced the Saints with a season-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and tied his career best with seven assists.
Lucas Burton also finished with 15 points and added five rebounds, while
Dewayne Vass tacked on 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a closely played first half, the Saints were trailing 31-25 before embarking on a 13-2 run to surge in front.
Lucas Burton started the run with a 3-pointer, threw down a dunk and added a bucket for a 32-31 lead. After the Flyers scored,
Davis Walker drilled a triple, and
Anthony Holden splashed in a trey. Burton scored late as Maryville went into halftime up 42-38 after shooting 57.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
Holden converted from deep, and
Dewayne Vass scored on a drive as the Saints took their largest lead of the game at 47-40. Lewis closed the gap before Vass sank a 3-pointer for a 50-46 edge. The Flyers tied the game before
Luke Williams connected from beyond the arc to take a 54-52 margin. The game swung back and forth and Lewis retook a 60-59 lead. Redd had a three-point play as Maryville went ahead 62-60 with just under six minutes to play. Lewis tallied six-in-a-row before Vass converted another 3-pointer to trim the gap to just 66-65. The Flyers followed with nine straight points and held on to end the Maryville win streak.
