SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Down 1-0 going into the final ten minutes of play, the Maryville men's soccer team pulled off a near miraculous comeback at Illinois Springfield to steal a 2-1 victory and a fireworks celebration from the Prairie Stars.
Sebastian Weitlaner and
Jacob Darwesh Lund Iversen were the engines behind the comeback, with Sivert Roeberg getting the assist on the Lund-Iversen game winner.
In his return to Springfield, Ill.,
Adam Hall earned his 18th victory of his Maryville tenure, now sitting 2-0-1 against his former school.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side were able to mount solid offensive opportunities in the first half of play as it remained a scoreless draw going into halftime, with Maryville leading 6-3 in the shots category.
The intermission woke up UIS as after a
Jose Vilela's shot in the 54th minute, UIS scored on a free kick set piece to take a 1-0 lead.
Physicality and desperation sank in for the Saints from that moment on as the clocked dropped under ten minutes. Eventually the aggression paid off as
Jan Fulnek drove into the box, getting fouled, setting up a Weitlaner penalty which he hammered home for the equalizer.
The Saints refused to settle for the tie with Lund-Iversen scoring off a pass by Roeberg to grab the late lead in the 88th minute.
Maryville ended the night, basking in the fireworks show at Kiwanis Field.
