SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Maryville women's soccer team earned a tough-fought road victory at Illinois Springfield on Friday evening, scoring two second-half goals to move to 7-1-4 on the year.
Sophia Carter and
Elsa Nilson-Hurtig were the goal scorers for the Saints, Carter's coming in the 54th minute while Hurtig added hers in the 61st. All three goals in the match came within six minutes of play. Nilson-Hurtig and
Ashlyne Hunt were credited with the assists on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing on natural grass for the first time this season, offense was hard to come by for both sides in the first 45 minutes, with Maryville earning the lone shot in the 27th minute by
Gina Catanzaro.
The lack of offense changed rapidly as Carter's goal came just eight minutes into the half, with UIS's response coming just minutes later. Excitement stayed high as Maryville's almost immediate response quieted an energetic Prairie Stars crowd at Kiwanis Field.
