ST. LOUIS – The Maryville men's soccer team battled hard but came up short against the No. 12-ranked Lincoln Blue Tigers, falling 1-0 on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Tigers pressed early, forcing three straight corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes. Their pressure paid off with a quick turnover that led to a goal, giving Lincoln the early lead. The Saints responded quickly with shots from
Jan Fulnek and
Adrian Fuster Juretzki, though neither found the net. Both sides battled for possession in the midfield and traded opportunities, with the first half ending even in shots and corners.
Maryville came out with energy in the second half, generating several scoring opportunities but still unable to break through. As the half progressed, goalkeeper
Steen Nielsen made two crucial saves to keep Lincoln from extending their lead. In the 80th minute,
Axton Anom nearly leveled the score, and the Saints had one final chance off a late corner, but Lincoln held firm to secure the 1-0 victory.
