CHICAGO – With a stifling defensive effort, the Maryville women's basketball team won its second straight game to kick off the season with a 52-38 decision at Roosevelt.
Lindsey Schadewalt topped the team with 12 points, while
Annika Pluemer added 10 points. The Maryville defense held the Lakers to just 13 field goals and a .236 percent field goal percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints took a 15-14 lead after the first quarter. Maryville answered with the game's decisive run, outscoring the Lakers 11–3 in the second quarter. The Saints forced 10 Roosevelt turnovers in the period and ended the half on a 9-1 stretch to build a 26-17 halftime advantage. The Saints held Roosevelt to just three points in the second quarter, forcing nine first-half turnovers and limiting the Lakers to 1-of-9 shooting in the frame.
Gracie Gopalan's driving layup and Pluemer's free throws fueled a 7-1 Maryville run that pushed the lead into double digits.

Maryville kept the pressure on after the break, starting the third quarter with a 7-0 run led by baskets from Schadewalt and Gopalan to extend the lead to 30-17. Roosevelt briefly halted the momentum with a pair of transition scores, but the Saints countered with another quick burst - five straight points from the bench - to maintain a double-digit cushion entering the fourth.

Maryville extended its advantage in the third quarter with another key 7-0 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer from
Claire Lueken that gave the Saints their largest lead at 42-25. Roosevelt never drew closer than 12 the rest of the way.

The Saints' defense held Roosevelt to 13-of-55 shooting and forced 24 turnovers. Maryville also turned those giveaways into 20 points, controlling the pace throughout the final quarter to seal the victory.
