St. Louis – The Maryville volleyball team pushed two sets into extra points but closed out the regular season with a three-set loss against Quincy Saturday afternoon in Moloney Arena. The Hawks narrowly edged the Saints 26-24, 25-18, 26-24. Emma Hoing paced the Saints with 12 kills and a .345 hitting percentage, while Ella Brinkmann finished with 11 kills and 18 digs. Lynsey Batson came up with seven blocks on the day.
 
How it Happened
Set one had 10 ties and was deadlocked at 23-23. Brinkmann had a kill for set point but QU saved it. The Hawks followed with back-to-back kills to take the opener 26-24. In the second set, Quincy used a 5-0 run to take the early lead. Leslie Longanbach and Hoing both had kills to keep the Saints close. A block by Brinkmann and Longanbach pulled the Saints to 13-9 but the Saints scored three straight and five of the next six points. QU pulled away with a 4-0 to build a 2-0 led in sets.
 
The third went back and forth with 13 ties and six lead changes. Down 8-5, the Saints scored four straight Ella Domian's crosscourt kill started the run, and a hard hit by Hoing put Maryville up 9-8. The Saints still led 13-11 after a Quincy error but the set was tied again at 15-all. Trailing 18-16, Hoing sandwiched a pair of kills around a block by Lynsey Batson and Ellie Witthaus for a 19-18 edge. QU answered to built a 23-19 advantage before the Saints got a kill from Witthaus and Brinkmann. It was match point at 24-22 but Brinkmann and Hailey Levinson put down kills to tie the set at 24-all. However, the Hawks notched two straight points to escape with the win.
