DES MOINES, Iowa – Maryville wrestling had its first major open of the season, heading north to the Grand View Open. Seven of the 21 Saints who competed placed.
Jeremiah Larson's third-place finish at 197 was the highest among those in the open division. In the freshman/sophomore division,
Caleb Carter led the way with a runner-up finish at 141.

In the open division,
JP Homfeld earned a fourth-place finish at 141, while
Mustafa Salimi added another fourth-place result at 165. In the freshman/sophomore division,
Elijah Almarinez placed fifth at 125.
Yashua Amen took sixth at 133, and
Caden Gousetis matched that placement at 184 to round out Maryville's top finishes.

Larson, a returning NCAA national qualifier, was dominant in the Hawkeye State. He opened his day with a tech fall before pushing CJ Carter of Iowa State in the quarterfinals, ultimately falling 11-5. From there, he earned a pin, back-to-back majors and a 14-12 decision in the third-place match to wrap up a 5-1 day.

The newcomer from Afghanistan, Salimi, officially made his debut for the red and black in Iowa. The highly touted transfer wasted no time, earning a fall in just 31 seconds for his first win as a Saint. After advancing to the semifinals, he dropped a match to Iowa State's Aiden Riggins, a 2025 NCAA Division I national qualifier. He earned a major in the consolation semifinals before falling 12-6 to another Iowa State wrestler in the third-place match.

Carter was electric at 141 to start his day. A 19-4 tech fall opened his tournament, followed by a 12-3 major. A tight third-round match saw him secure a sudden-victory win in overtime to reach the quarterfinals. An 8-3 quarterfinal win and a 4-3 semifinal victory sent him to the championship match, where he took an 18-5 loss to place second.

After showing promise at the Mizzou Duals, Almarinez impressed again, earning four bonus-point wins on his way to a fifth-place finish. Amen followed a similar script at 133, picking up three straight falls to reach the quarterfinals. After stumbling there, he added two more wins to finish his day 5-2.

Maryville returns to a familiar tournament next week, heading to the Kaufman-Brand Open hosted by Central Missouri on Nov. 22.
