ST. LOUIS – Ashlyne Hunt's 21st minute goal was all it took for the No. 3-seeded Maryville women's soccer team to oust the No. 6 Rockhurst in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Saint's defense was electric all contest, allowing just one shot in each half, with goalkeeper
Agnes Vilen making saves on both.
Maryville now has a date with the McKendree Bearcats in the GLVC semifinals at Creve Coeur Park Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Playing on a frigid and windy Lonnie Folks Field, the Saints played with the wind to their back in the first half of play. With that advantage, they quickly stormed out to the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute of play, as Hunt hammered home her sixth goal of the year on a clinical finish.
After the goal, the defense took over, overwhelming the Rockhurst midfield as the Saints racked up two more corners and 11 more shots, two on net.
Vilen ended her day with two saves, while defenders
Izzy Oldroyd,
Reese Cannon,
Greta Ståhl and
Carissa Speight all recorded 90 minutes in the complete defensive effort.
