ST. LOUIS – In the first game of a four-game set with the Drury Panthers, the Maryville baseball team saw
Matt Arnold's career day spoiled in a 14-8 loss.
Arnold was the standout of the day, belting two home runs—one in the fifth and one in the eighth—in his first career multi-homer game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers started strong, plating six runs in the first two innings and knocking the Saints' starter out in the first.
Maryville finally got its response in the fourth inning, with
Camden Ruby hammering a ball over the centerfield wall for a two-run home run, making it 6-2.
Just an inning later, Arnold hit his first homer of the day, a shot that barely cleared the left field wall, making it a three-run game. However, the Panthers denied the comeback by scoring four more runs in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 10-3.
After a tough seventh inning,
Brady Kindhart got the Saints going with a double to the right field gap, scoring
Josh Herget and
Cole Christman. Just two batters later, Arnold rejuvenated the Dawgs with his second homer of the day, a dead-center shot that brought them within two.
Drury, despite the Saints attempts to equalize, ended the game with their fourth four-run inning of the ballgame in the top of the ninth.
On the mound, both
Lukas McGill and Jeffery Henry made their collegiate debuts.
