INDIANAPOLIS – A balanced attack along with a season-high tying 13 3-pointers keyed the Maryville women's basketball team to a 77-58 victory Thursday night at Indianapolis. The Saints had eight players score at least seven points. In addition, Maryville drilled 13 3-pointers to match their previous best at Missouri S&T, and eight different players made at least one shot from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints roared out to an early lead on the strength of a 7-0 run.
Lindsey Schadewalt nailed a turnaround jumper, and
Annika Pluemer followed with a drive and a bucket.
Faith Hawthorne drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 9-3 edge.
Adylan Ayer splashed in back-to-back 3-pointers for a 17-9 advantage. The barrage from deep continued as Hawthorne and
Olivia Hahn rained down triples for a 23-11 margin. The Saints tallied the final six points of the quarter.
Caden Krohn sank a trey, and Ayer completed a three-point play for a 29-13 lead after one. Maryville converted six treys in the opener.
UIndy heated up in the second and trimmed the gap down to 34-31. The Saints steadied themselves with four free throws, and went on a late 7-1 run. Pluemer bookended the run with driving layups, and Krohn had a three-point play. The Saints took a 45-37 lead at halftime.
The Greyhounds scored the first six points after the break before the Saints answered with a 9-1 burst. Schadewalt and
Gracie Stugart made consecutive buckets at the start. Schadewalt converted another jumper, and a deep triple by Hahn restored a double-digit lead. Schadewalt and Stugart again found the range from beyond the arc as the Saints eventually took a 60-49 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Stugart converted a layup, and a bucket and triple by Rake was good for a 67-53 cushion. After two Schadewalt free throws, Rake rained down a transition 3-pointer as the Saints tied their margin of the day at 72-56 with 3:40 remaining.
