ST. LOUIS – The Maryville baseball team evened up and took the lead in its four-game series against regional rival UIndy on Saturday. The Saints took game one by a mark of 5-3 behind five solid innings of work from
Ben Gregory.
Gregory's five-inning were overshadowed in game two as
Ryan Hoshaw delivered a complete game, leading the Saints to a 7-2 victory.
The wins marked the first time the Saints have defeated the Greyhounds since March 19, of 2023.
GAME 1 | MARYVILLE 5, UINDY 3
Gregory looked untouchable early, as after a single in the top of the first, he went to work, striking out five consecutive Greyhounds, including all three batters in the top of the second. After that lights-out second frame, the offense came to support BG, gifting him three runs.
A leadoff walk by
Michael Long set the stage, with back-to-back singles by
Cole Christman and
Cameron Macon scoring two runs.
Jace Burton eventually snagged his own RBI-single later in the inning to leave it 3-0.
The Saints weren't done there as they plated two more off an
Aaris Stolte single in the third for a 5-0.
UIndy attempted some of its late comeback magic, plating runs in the sixth and the seventh, but
Alex Bryan out of the bullpen held them off long enough for the win.
GAME 2 | MARYVILLE 7, UINDY 2
It was a battle of lefty starters in game two as the Hounds sent out Bennett Rogers, while the Saints rallied behind Hoshaw. Both looked excellent early, with each facing the minimum in the first.
UIndy grabbed its first lead of the day in the top of the second, using some situational hitting to scratch across a pair. Much like Friday, no runs went unanswered as a leadoff bomb by Christman cut the lead in half.
Camden Ruby's single, plus two bases-loaded walks, left the lead a 4-2 in favor of the Saints.
Hoshaw kept cooking from there, allowing just three hits for the remainder of the ballgame for the complete game. Long and Macon combined for three more runs across the fifth and sixth, giving Hoshaw room to close it out.
The seven-inning performance marked the longest outing of Hoshaw's career.
