ST. LOUIS – The Maryville baseball team, in its first game of it's three-team round robin with Hillsdale and Emporia State, dropped a high-scoring affair to the Hornets, losing 18-11.
Emporia plated runs in all but three innings, including a big six-run second and a dagger five-run ninth. The Saints used a big five-run third and a three-run seventh to make it a game, but the Hornets came out with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After both teams plated runs in the first, the Hornets exploded for six, with some sloppy defense by the Saints and a big bases clearing triple by ESU ballooning their lead to six.
Brady Kindhart responded with his own triple, scoring both
Josh Herget and
Michael Long. An RBI groundout by
Aaris Stolte and a 2 RBI single by
Ambrose Russo tied the game for the Saints heading into the third frame.
The Hornets responded to the Saints with two in both the top of the fifth, with all three coming via the long ball.
Matt Arnold responded in the seventh, hammering his third home run of the season to make it a 11-10. But from there, the Hornets piled on seven more runs, with the Saints only able respond with one to end the game.
The Saints employed six different pitchers, with
Blake Sivak recording three innings of scoreless ball.

The Saints are back on the diamond tomorrow at 11 a.m., battling the Hillsdale Chargers.
