ST. LOUIS – The Maryville baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped by the Truman State Bulldogs on Thursday, splitting the doubleheader.Â
The Saints won game one behind a complete game by
Braden Smith who struck out seven while giving up just one earned run.
Game two saw the Bulldogs take the lead in the fifth inning, before shutting out the Saints for the next three innings.Â
GAME 1 | Maryville 4, Truman 2
The Saints plated runs in the first and second innings, with
Jace Burton's bases-loaded walk in the first and Dom Sharps RBI single being the culprits.Â
An unearned run in the top of the fourth brought the lead down to one, with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth by
Ambrose Russo bringing it right back up to two in the bottom of the fifth.Â
The Bulldogs got their lone earned run in the seventh, using a sun-induced triple to score a runner from second.
Cole Christman, like clockwork, blasted one deep over the centerfield wall to re-up the lead.Â
Smith closed it from there, working out of a jam in the top of the ninth with a rare 9-3 double play.Â
GAME 2 | Truman 6, Maryville 4
Truman jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after just two frames. But almost as quickly as they got there, the Saints brought it right back, with Christman going yard again for his second of the day. Russo, just an inning later, let it fly as well for the lead, hammering a no-doubter to right for a 5-3 lead.Â
The Bulldogs fought right back, taking advantage of a throwing error by the Saints to tie the game and then an RBI single for the lead.Â
Despite getting the tying run just 90 feet away in the bottom of the seventh, the Saints could not get it home as they fell for the first time since April 1.Â
