ST. LOUIS –
Trent Zimay scored with 1:48 left in overtime to rally the Maryville men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 9-8 victory over Lewis in the 2025 Great Lakes Valley Conference championship game. The goal capped a late rally for the Saints who overcame a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes of regulation. The triumph clinches the GLVC's automatic berth for the Saints into the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers scored the first four goals of the game before the Saints rallied in the second.
Ben Mickett broke through for the first goal and tacked on a second with a man-up off a feed from
Clayton Cerett. Just 15 seconds later,
Jake Grebe feed Zimay for the first of his four goals. Zimay scored with 55 seconds left as the Saints eventually forced a 4-4 tie at halftime.
The teams traded goals in the third as Mickett tied the game at 5-5 and
Dagan Carlson took a pass from
Justin Simonson to deadlock the game again at 6-6 heading into the fourth. Lewis retook an 8-6 lead before the Saints came back again. Zimay completed his hat trick and pulled the Saints to within 8-7 with 3:36 to play.
Lewis won the ensuing faceoff but the Maryville defense forced a shot clock violation to get the ball back. From a steep angle on the side, Simonson launched in the tying goal with 57.1 seconds to play. Each team had one possession in the waning seconds but the game moved into overtime.
Shea Raeburn won the draw but the Saints were unable to put a shot on frame. Lewis took over but
Dylan Radke came up with his 11th save of the day. The Saints pushed forward and cycled the ball to the left.
Colin Tobias pushed up left side of the Lewis cage, and Zimay tucked the ball just inside the far-right post for the championship-winning goal.
