Saints Drop Game One of GLVC Tournament to Hawks

MARION, Ill. – The Maryville baseball team in its long-awaited return to Mtn. Dew Park suffered a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the No. 6-seeded Quincy Hawks. The struggles came on the defensive side of the ball as the Saints had five errors over nine innings, resulting in four unearned runs.

The Saints bats were kept quiet for majority of the ballgame, with Ambrose Russo's third-inning homer and a 3 for 4 day from Co-Freshman of the Year Jace Burton being the lone offensive highlights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks scored the first two runs of the game, plating one off a error in the second. Another came across in the third with a ball that barely stayed fair down the left field line, leaving it 2-0.

Russo, with one swing of the bat, evened the score in the bottom half of the third, belting his first postseason home run of his Saint career.

As quickly as the Saints took the lead, it vanished, with the Hawks rattling off two in the fourth to make it 4-2. A two-spot in the seventh and another in the eighth found the seven the Hawks ended the game with. Nick Daugherty attempted to ignite some late-game energy with his RBI single in the seventh, but it was not enough.

UP NEXT
The Saints will battle the Missouri S&T Miners tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the first elimination game of the tournament.
