Hunt Nails Last-Second Goal, Saints Defeat SBU 1-0

ST. LOUIS – As the clock ticked down from ten, a ball placed in the box by Sophia Carter rattled around before being hammered into the goal by senior Ashlyne Hunt, giving the Maryville women's soccer team the win over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opener. The win marked the third-straight in a row for the No. 22-ranked Saints squad.

The Saints dominated the possession, taking 26 shots, with nine of them going on frame. Elsa Nilson-Hurtig represented seven of those shots. Despite overwhelming heat, Greta Ståhl and Alexa Holley both recorded 90 minute performances in the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Allison Estanich began the shot spree for the Saints in the 13th minute as the Saints peppered the Bearcat keeper with 12 shots. SBU's stout defensive shape limited the ability of Maryville to create threatening chances as the first 45 ended at a stalemate.

That remained the story long into the second half, with a corner kick in the 90th minute finally allowing the Saints to establish some offense. A ball played into the box by Carter turned into a scramble with Hunt finding the back of the net.

UP NEXT
The Saints stay in conference play as they welcome in the William Jewell Cardinals Friday, Sept 19 at 4 p.m.
