ST. LOUIS – A steady possession game and three different goal scorers powered the Maryville women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over William Jewell on Friday afternoon, extending the Saints' win streak to four.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when
Kelsey Wentland found the back of the net to put Maryville ahead early. After the halftime break,
Ashlyne Hunt doubled the lead before
Anne van Son sealed the match with a third goal, ensuring a comfortable result in the Saints' second conference matchup of the season.
Maryville dictated the pace of play from start to finish, controlling the midfield and creating consistent pressure in the attacking third. The shutout marks the Saints' fourth-consecutive win and another confident step forward in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints wasted no time asserting pressure, earning their first corner less than a minute into the match and following it with a flurry of early shots. That persistence paid off in the 22nd minute, when Wentland broke the deadlock by finishing off a sequence started with a cross from
Jaqui Granados and a headed pass from
Allison Estanich.
Maryville's patient buildup kept William Jewell pinned deep in its own half, and the momentum carried into the second half. Just minutes after the restart,
Ashlyne Hunt scored a header to double the Saint's lead. In the 61st minute,
Anne van Son marked her season debut with a goal, assisted by
Helene Braren, giving Maryville a comfortable cushion as they controlled possession for the remainder of the match.
