Saints Sweep Upper Iowa for First GLVC Victory

FAYETTE, IOWA – The Maryville volleyball team saw four players record at least eight kills as the Saints picked up their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season with a sweep at Upper Iowa. The visitors posted a 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 triumph.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints scored the first three points of the match and led the rest of the set. Ellie Witthaus started the run with a kill, and Ella Domian followed with consecutive terminations for a 3-0 edge. Still up 10-7, the Saints tacked on another 3-0 run. Lynsey Batson and Emma Hoing had a block, and Batson added a kill. Caroline Glastetter drilled down a ball for a 13-7 margin. Maryville's margin was 20-16 before taking charge with four straight points. Domian's kill ended the set at 25-17.
 
The Peacocks had their best hitting percentage of the day but the Saints still prevailed in the second set. Trailing 4-3, Maryville answered by scoring eight of the next nine points. Longanbach bookended a 4-0 surge with kills as the Saints built an 11-5 advantage. UIU chipped away and pulled even at 12-all. The Saints responded with another 4-0 surge to go back on top 16-12. The hosts rallied to take a 21-20 lead until the Saints forged a deadlock at 23-all. Batson had a kill before she and Domian's block ended the set at 25-23.
 
Set three was close throughout and saw the score tied on 12 occasions. Deadlocked at 18-18, the Saints closed with a flurry of points. A solo block by Batson started the match-ending run. Ella Brinkmann tacked on a kill before the Maryville defense forced UIU into committing fifth straight errors to end the contest. Brinkmann, Domian and Longanbach all finished with nine kills apiece, while Glastetter added eight kills.
