ROLLA, Mo. – Sivert Roberg was the hero of the match for the Maryville men's soccer team as it defeated the Missouri S&T Miners in Rolla, Mo., on Sunday afternoon.
The freshman from Molde, Norway scored in the 67th minute of play for not only his first collegiate goal, but the game winner as well. The Saints and Miners were both relentless on the offensive side of the ball, with Maryville taking 19 shots and the Miners having 14 of their own.
Pedro Meidanis and
Jose Vilela, both off the bench, each managed to take four shots each in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On the speedy turf of Allgood-Bailey Stadium, play moved fast for both teams. Just four minutes into the contest,
Steen Nielsen, who got his first start in goal of the season, faced two early shots, neither going on frame.
Jacob Darwesh Lund Iversen and
Marcos Ayelo responded in tow to set the stage for what became a high tempo first half for both squads.
At the end of the first 45 minutes of play, both teams managed eight shots with the Saints leading 3-2 on corners. Out of the break, Meidanis quickly hammered one on frame, with Vilela not far behind in the 50th minute with his own shot.
The constant pressure by the Saints eventually broke the scoreless draw as a ball played up the left side of the field from
Tommy Barrell found
Axton Anom to dished up a perfect pass to an open Roberg for the go-ahead. The defensive effort of the Saints was stout from there on out, allowing just one more shot on goal to end the game 1-0.
Nielsen, in his return to the goal, earned his first clean sheet of the year while snagging four saves.
