Last Second Goal Forces Stalemate in Season Opener

ST. LOUIS – Despite the Maryville women's soccer team holding a 1-0 lead in the final seconds, the Washburn Ichabods stole victory away from the Saints their 2025 season opener. Gina Catanzaro accounted for the Saints goal in the first half, with an assist coming from Allison Estanich as the two teads played to a 1-1 draw.

With just 6 seconds left in the game, Washburn sent a ball into the box, which after a scrum of players made contact, it bounced right in front of a Washburn player allowing them to force the tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After an early push by the Ichabods, the Saints regained their focus, with Elsa Nilson-Hurtig earning the first shot the season, a missile of a kick that hit the crossbar, just inches from going in. Another shot by Nilson-Hurtig came and went at the 36th minute. The pressure kept building from there, as a foul drawn allowed for a Estanich free kick, which she placed perfectly to the far side of the box where a flying Catanzaro scored the first goal of the year.

It remained tied from there going into halftime. Coming out of the break, physicality set in from both sides. The young backline of the Saints held the Ichabods scoreless until the final seconds of the contest.

UP NEXT
The Saints will continue non-conference play on Saturday as they battle the Emporia State Hornets on the campus of Drury University in Springfield, Mo. The contest is set to begin at 12 p.m. CT.
