Lueken Notches Double-Double but Lewis Downs the Saints in Overtime

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – Despite a double-double from Claire Lueken, the Maryville women's basketball team dropped a taut 70-65 overtime decision at Lewis University. The Saints took a 63-62 lead with 1:46 left in the extra session but the Flyers scored eight of the final 10 points of the game. Lindsey Schadewalt led all scorers with 19 points, while Lueken finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints found themselves down 28-20 at halftime before Lindsey Schadewalt scored on back-to-back possessions. Maryville went on an 8-2 surge and closed to 36-34 after an Alicia Burgos jumper. Lewis hit a 3-pointer in the final minute but Madyson Rigdon answered for the Saints with a deep trey to bring the Saints to 44-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Claire Lueken converted three straight buckets to give the Saints a 45-44 edge, their first lead since early in the first quarter, which grew to 47-44 at the 6:32 mark. Bree Shannon hit a driving layup to spark a 6-0 run. Adylan Ayer tacked on a jumper, and two at the line from Shannon built a 53-46 lead with four minutes to play. However, the Flyers scored the next six points to forge a tie at 53-53. The Saints had three shots to go ahead but the game rolled into overtime.
 
Gopalan converted two free throws to start OT but Lewis made two straight baskets. Burgos made a layup to trim the gap to one. The Flyers went back up 60-57 before Schadewalt sank two at the stripe, and Lueken scored on a layup for a 61-60 lead. The hosts went back ahead but Lueken again had the answer for a 63-62 edge. The Flyers made a bucket and two free throws to built a 66-63 lead in the final minute. Schadewalt scored on a layup to trip the gap to 66-65 but Lewis had a three-point play and iced the game with one free throw in the waning seconds.
