ST. LOUIS – A five-run second inning was not enough for Maryville on Thursday afternoon as the Saints fell to Saginaw Valley State 12-7 at Weber Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryville erased an early two-run deficit with a crooked number in the bottom of the second, sending nine hitters to the plate to grab a 5-2 advantage.
Â
After
Dominic Anselmo singled to start the frame and
Dominic Sharp followed with a base hit,
Nick Daugherty laced a two-run double down the left-field line to even the score. Andrew Stolte later added an RBI single, and a pair of wild pitches helped the Saints tack on another run before
Jace Burton capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Saints added to their lead in the third when Jackson Meyer doubled and later scored on Anselmo's RBI single to make it 6-2. In the fourth, Gavin Rathgeb doubled and came home on Meyer's second hit of the afternoon, stretching the margin to 7-3.
From there, the Cardinals went on to score eight unanswered runs, including three homers to take the lead.
Â
Meyer finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Anselmo also collected two hits. Daugherty drove in two runs and Stolte added an RBI in the loss.
Â
Maryville managed just one hit over the final five innings as the opposing bullpen struck out nine over five shutout frames to close the door.
