Saints Drop Doubleheader to Cardinals

ST. LOUIS – Maryville dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to Saginaw Valley State at Weber Baseball Field, falling 4-3 in the opener before a 5-2 setback in game two.

GAME ONE | Saginaw Valley State 4, Maryville 3
Saginaw Valley struck quickly in the first inning of the opener, capitalizing on a walk, a stolen base and a two-run single before adding a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.

The visitors added another run in the fifth, using an error and a pair of singles to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Maryville broke through in the sixth. A solo home run from Dominic Sharp to right put the Saints on the board, and a double followed by an RBI single by Dominic Anselmo cut the deficit to two. Later in the inning, Maryville plated another run on an infield error to trim the margin to 4-3 and put the tying run on base.

The Saints had traffic in the late innings, including a leadoff double in the seventh, but could not push the equalizer across as Saginaw Valley secured the 4-3 win.

GAME TWO | Saginaw Valley State 5, Maryville 2
In the nightcap, Saginaw Valley again jumped in front early, opening the game with a solo home run in the first inning. The visitors added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

Maryville threatened in the fourth and broke through with an RBI single by Greyson Rathgeb to make it 2-1, but Saginaw Valley answered in the fifth, taking advantage of three errors in the frame to plate an unearned run.

The visitors created separation in the sixth, stringing together three hits to score twice and push the lead to 5-1.

Maryville scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth on a double by and a groundout to close within 5-2, but the Saints were limited to just one hit over the final three innings as Saginaw Valley completed the sweep.
